Structure-function correlation in glycine oxidase from Bacillus subtilis.

Structure-function relationships of the flavoprotein glycine oxidase (GO), which was recently proposed as the first enzyme in the biosynthesis of thiamine in Bacillus subtilis, has been investigated by a combination of structural and functional studies. The structure of the GO-glycolate complex was determined at 1.8 A, a resolution at which a sketch of the residues involved in FAD binding and i...

Bilirubin oxidase activity of Bacillus subtilis CotA.

The spore coat protein CotA from Bacillus subtilis was previously identified as a laccase. We have now found that CotA also shows strong bilirubin oxidase activity and markedly higher affinity for bilirubin than conventional bilirubin oxidase. This is the first characterization of bilirubin oxidase activity in a bacterial protein.

Fine Structure of Bacillus subtilis

The fine structure of Bacillus subtilis has been studied by observing sections fixed in KMnO(4), OsO(4), or a combination of both. The majority of examinations were made in samples fixed in 2.0 per cent KMnO(4) in tap water. Samples were embedded in butyl methacrylate for sectioning. In general, KMnO(4) fixation appeared to provide much better definition of the boundaries of various structures ...

Analysis of Spo0M function in Bacillus subtilis

Spo0M has been previously reported as a regulator of sporulation in Bacillus subtilis; however, little is known about the mechanisms through which it participates in sporulation, and there is no information to date that relates this protein to other processes in the bacterium. In this work we present evidence from proteomic, protein-protein interaction, morphological, subcellular localization m...

Structure of the polyglutamic acid from Bacillus subtilis.

on the soluble peptide from B. 8ubtili8 by Bovarnick (1942), the B. anthraci8 capsule by Hanby & Rydon (1946) and the soluble peptide from B. meoentericus by Pongor (1950) has shown that, to the extent of at least 99 %, glutamic acid is the only nitrogen-containing substance in the peptide hydrolysates. The optical configuration of the glutamic acid appears to vary from one preparation to anoth...
